I don't know about you, but this sermon stopped me right in my tracks. One word that kept coming to my mind was the word "baggage." And instead of having name-tags on our baggage we have words; words that we think define us but don't. If they did, mine would be postpartum depression, PTSD, sexual assault victim, eating disorder, just a mom, and only a wife. Although those are things I have overcome or spoken into existence, they DO NOT define me and whatever name-tags you have put on yourself certainly DO NOT DEFINE YOU.

During this service, I learned something interesting: in the Bible, there are two Greek words used for the meaning of  "word." The first one is logos. The actual word of God, all the scripture written in the Bible. I'm so thankful we have something that we can turn to every single day for God to speak to us and show us who he is. His words literally on paper for us to grasp, for us to digest, and for us to KNOW. There's no questioning when it comes to these words - HIS words, it's right there at our fingertips. He is showing us who He is, His salvation and all of His plans for all of humanity. While logos is a great place to start to learn about God and His ways, rhema is when we experience him on a personal level. Rhema is the word that Gods speaks to us in the now. Something that resonates and feeds us.

For example, the other day I was hard on myself because I took my kids to school in my pajamas. I was "that mom" and as the self-doubt and baggage began to surface 2 Corinthians 8-11 popped out to me while reading scripture that morning. While logos showed me His truth in His word, I believe rhema was what drew me to it over and over again. God was telling me that my sufficiency begins and ends with him. Same with you. To receive God is not passive, its active. It takes effort from each of us to grab His words. Objectively and subjectively and run with it.

In John 1:1 it states that the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Isn't it relieving to know that since the beginning the Word was already there? That there was already the thought of Jesus and you? We have a sound of mind in the Word of God since the beginning. There might be some of you reading this that feel stuck; stuck with all that baggage. If that's you,  take a moment to sit in silence and listen. Listen to what is being laid out in your head and ask God "Is this for me?" Listen to the insecurities of your heart and lay them down on the line and say "NO MORE." Friend, you are a child of God, and he has been pursuing you before you even thought of it. He will always be faithful to reveal the next step and guide you to his very best yes.

So my question for you today is, are you going to listen? Are you going to follow? Are you going to sit and bear fruit for your life within his word? Are you going to step out in faith and speak light into existence with your tongue or are you going to continue to live in darkness? I don't know about you, but I want to RISE UP. I want to rise up when I'm lost and say BUT GOD.

  • Genesis 8:1 "But God reminded Noah.."

  • Genesis 50:20 "You intended to harm me, BUT God intended it for good.."

  • Nehemiah 9:17 "BUT you are a forgiving God..."

  • Psalm 49:15 "BUT God will redeem my life.."

  • Psalm 73:26 "My flesh and my heart may fail, BUT God is the strength of my heart.."

  • Matthew 19:26 "BUT with God all things are possible."

  • Acts 2:24 "BUT God raises from the dead."

  • Romans 6:23 "..BUT the gift of God is eternal life."

  • Acts 5:39 "BUT if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourself fighting against God.

  • 1 Kings 5:4 "BUT now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side..."

When there seems to be too much baggage, remember BUT GOD and that with Jesus there are all things NEW. He makes a way when there seems to be none.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a NEW creature.."

  • Ezekiel 11:19 "And I will give them one heart, and put a NEW spirit within them.."

  • Isaiah 62:2 "And you will be called by a NEW name.."

  • Lamentations 3:22-23 "His mercies never come to an end; they are NEW every morning.."

  • John 3:16 "have EVERLASTING LIFE."

  • 1 Peter 1:3 "According to his mercy, he has caused us to be BORN AGAIN.."

  • Romans 6:3-4 "we too may live a NEW life."

  • Revelation 21:5 "I am making all things NEW.."

I want to end this with Proverbs 18:21 "Power of life and death is on our tongue." The words we fill our hearts and minds kill us. Let's read and listen to his truth and get where we are going, not stay stuck.

Let me pray for you. "Lord, God. I pray that Your words would start something new in lost hearts. That where there is a hunger for You, that you feed them with Your presence. That You confirm everything, You have spoken over their lives. Lord, I pray that if someone is feeling stuck that their chains would break that the words they have spoken over themselves and their lives would cast to a fire. And let their heart yearn You. I pray that in their silence they hear You. Lord God, I pray that they see that You have been pursuing them before they ever knew. Lord, I pray that while they are standing still that You would catapult them into where they are meant to be. I pray that they RISE. Rise up and say BUT GOD."
