NEXT: THE BIG MISSION

My City Church exists "to lift up Jesus in our city by loving people and empowering leaders in every sphere of life." The first Next Step is to understand that there is a Big Mission. This summer is going to be full with the "Nuts and Bolts" of what it means to be a Christian and to grow our relationship with God. The NEXT series is going to help us understand the fundamentals of what we need in our lives from God and what we can do to help others in their relationship with HIM. Faith is built through next steps.

There are two things that Jesus said were great. The great commission is in Matthew 28: 18-20 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commission I have given you. And be sure of this; I am with you always, even to the end of the age." And the great commandment is in Matthew 22: 37-39 Jesus replied, "'You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all you soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'

Fundamentals are the backbone of any great skill; "wax on wax off". The karate kid didn't learn his skills overnight or by huge shows in public, it was the small things he did in private that built his foundation so he could build something great on top of that. Waxing a car has virtually nothing to do with learning the art of karate and isn't a flashy thing but it is necessary to become great. Foundations aren't sexy, in fact most are hidden under the surface but  people don't build houses without foundations because they determine how big the house can be built on it. Our relationship with God is the same. The spiritual foundation we build must be strong enough and powerful enough to take on whatever comes at us.

As we go along our individual journeys we need to make sure our Why is right so the What makes sense. When God is out of his proper order everything else in life is our of order.  You can try to do so many things to make your what right but if your why isn't set where it needs to be your what will never be fulfilling. God wants us to have clear next steps to allow Him to challenge our hearts so the things that come out of our lives are healthy and produce life. The things we do aren't built out of religion but built out of a response to faith.

We can visualize the stability of growing our spiritual foundation like a 3 legged stool. You can stand on a 3 legged stool, do handstands, sit on it obviously but the when you take one of the legs off the stool isn't stable anymore. The first "leg" we NEED is prayer. We must teach ourselves and practice that prayer isn't to clock in and clock out but to it is continual and purposeful. Pray until you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes that takes 5 minutes and other times it could be a half hour, The next "leg" is the word. The Bible is written instruction from God on how to live our lives and how we can handle things. They aren't suggestions they are truths. The more we dive into the word the more good comes out of our lives and the more we can help others through their journey. Which brings us to the last stool leg, relationships. Having firm relationships with Godly people is super important in making sure we stay on track with God. People can be their to give us encouragement and to help walk us through struggles we may be having.

All these things help build a foundation that God can build off of and it is our job to build it, not the churches job. My City Church is making an environment for people to flourish in with every part of their life with the relationships we build here.
