EMPOWERED FOR LIFE: THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17
Just because you know something about someone doesnt always mean you know who the person is. That is very common when it comes to the Holy Spirit. We have heard alot of opinions of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Jesse used the referance of social media. Based on what you see on someones social media you develop an opinion about them but that doesnt mean you really know who that person is. It is almost like the Church has lost "the person" of the Holy Spirit and instead we have the "feed" of the Holy Spirit. A couple perceptions of the Holy Spirit are friend, counselor, and advocate. God sent the Holy Spirit to us to help empower us.
Who is the Holy Spirit? In order to understand who the Holy Spirit is you have to first understand the Trinity and God. The Defintion of the Trinity is the Unity of three divine persons, The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit in one God. The person "Father God" makes rational sense to most minds. We look at God as a Father figure in our lives just like our earthly fathers. We love the person "Son Jesus" because of the good news also known as the Gospel. He came to earth to die on a cross in order to rescue us from our sin. It is hard to put handles on the Holy Spirit. Geneis 1: 1-2 states "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." Here we see God and the Spirit of God as one. John 1:1-3 states "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." Here Jesus was hidden until He was reveled. During creation all 3 persons of God were working together as stated in the two verses above. The Holy Spirit is present in our lives. The Father is in heaven, Jesus is in heaven, but the Holy Spirit is in us. When Jesus left he told the diciples that another is coming, He was talking about the Holy spirit. John 14: 15-17 states “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." The Holy Spirit has a mission in our world to lead us to Jesus and be our advocate. To be more like Jesus you have to be lead by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is unseen- He is the breathe of God. Our breathe of fresh air.
How does the Holy Spirit lead us? He leads us three ways: convicts us, speaks to us, and empowers us. He convicts us of our sin, righteousness, and judgement. You dont have to live in sin anymore, you are free. The devil has been judged and you have liberated from sin. An example of this can be found in Acts 2:37. "When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”. Convictions lead to life change and life change leads to freedom. He speaks to us through this spirit. But not all voices are Gods voice. This reference can be found in 1 John 4:1."Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." Whenvever it's Gods voice then it builds us up and reinforces his word. Lastly he empowers us. Acts 1:8 states "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”.
WHERE THE HOLY SPIRIT IS, THERE IS FREEDOM!
