Next: Changing Me To We.
“We are not called to change the city, but to serve the city” - Jesse and Angela Norman
What does it mean to serve?
Before we can serve others we first have to receive the gift of God through the power of Jesus. Once we declare Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit that we are able to understand and know the love God has for each of us. Love so strong he gave his one and only Son.
When the Holy Spirit resides within you. You symbolize rebirth, rebirth in the name of Christ. With this rebirth comes faith. Faith that God will always give us what we need, when we need it. This applies to all aspects of our lives. It is important to understand that what we want is not always what we need.
“Have you wanted the right things for the wrong reasons?” Pastor Jesse Norman
Most of my prayers before finding Jesus resolved around my wants. When is it my turn to be married, when is it my turn to be financially stable, when is it my turn to [you name it.. I asked for it].
I love My City Church Podcast | Heart for the House: Pastor Justin Reimer Evening Service, let's play it!
Me or We?
I first began to understand the need to put “we before me” when Pastor Justin Reimer shared his message (link above). It was this message that humbled me most. My entire life I’ve been about when is it my turn. Then I so clearly heard the Spirit say use your strengths to help others and I will provide you everything you need. In that moment knew in my heart if I made Gods Will my priority everything else was going to be ok.
By leading a Christ filled life you allow the Holy Spirit to guide your life. You are then also blessed with unique “spiritual” gifts to fulfill His plan. You use these gifts not for yourself but for others.
“You can have something great but without the right thing, you will find it useless”. - Pastor Jesse Norman
Naturally we tend to care about our own well being. I’ve always had the mindset of “If I don’t do it.. who will?” These needs often came before the needs of others. So if I’m given these spiritual gifts but don’t use them for their purpose to help others as Jesus helped me. I’m completely missing the point.
When Jesus took to the cross he did not do it to abolish His sins, because He had no sin. Instead.. Jesus was the ultimate servant. He did for us what we could not do for ourselves. His entire purpose was to put “we before me”.
“Servanthood unlocks our design and reveals our Destiny” - Pastor Jesse
God is the designer of all and that includes you. Half of your design comes from serving others. Why you serve is just as important. The intentions of serving can’t come from a place of self fulfillment. We must serve for the right reasons with focus being on the greater good.
Your destiny is NOT your destination.
Your destiny is who you become not what you do? God is the only one who can validate you. By serving his plan he will do just that.
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” -Matthew 25:21 KJV
By serving and spreading the message of salvation in Christ. God will see your devotion, he will be pleased with you and he will elevate you to a life far beyond anything you could of hoped for. God does not want us to want for ourselves but for us to make a difference. If we can leave our vision for what we need and allow His vision to lead us. There is nothing in this world we can’t receive.
So how do we serve?
First we serve God and then we serve others. No act of service is to small for Gods plan? So I challenge you to sit with the Holy Spirt, find the spiritual gifts you were given, and use them to spread the love of God. As for me I’ll be using my gifts to (fingers crossed) not botch up this blog post, to serve coffee on Sunday and to continue my walk with God as he leads me to my Destiny.
